To enjoy the over 400 wineries in northern California’s wine country, you don’t have to be a wine connoisseur. Knowing just a few facts can give you a basic knowledge of wine and wine tasting. This article will provide general information about Napa Valley, California and will help you get the most from your Napa Valley wine tour.

California’s wine country includes lush valleys, acres of grapevines, and beautiful rolling hills. Some grapes are grown in higher altitudes though most are grown in the heart of Napa Valley. A Napa Valley wine tour can be taken by limousine, bus, van, Jeep, bicycle, and even hot air balloon. Tours may focus more on the countryside and scenery or on wine tasting and buying. There may even be a wine consultant available to assist wine samplers with finding just the right wine. There are some basic facts to know about wine that can help a novice wine tester through a wine tour. For example, most wines are named for the type of grape they are derived from. The wine bottle label may also contain the name of the winery and/or place of origin of the grapes, and the vintage, or year, the wine was bottled. Most wine tastes better when it has aged for several years though there are varieties in Napa Valley that can be enjoyed soon after bottling. When sampling wine, knowing the characteristics of the region where the grapes are grown will help you discern the wine’s flavor. Tasting several types of wine with food such as prosciutto, cheese, and/or chocolate can help you choose a favorite as various foods complement different types of wine. Wine should be open and “breathing” prior to tasting.

Napa Valley Wine Tour Without the Wine?

For families, children, or people who do not care for wine, Napa Valley still has many activities to offer. California’s wine country is located near major cities such as Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. A fun-filled day in the city is just a short drive or ferry ride away. Napa itself contains high quality shopping, fine dining, spas, and luxury hotel accommodations. There are also golf courses, bicycle and walking tours of the mountains and countryside, and romantic spots for vacationing couples or newlyweds.

A Napa Valley wine tour can be expensive. The best way to book your Napa Valley wine tour or wine country vacation is by purchasing vacation packages or buying in bulk. Buying tickets for the entire family, office, or wedding party can lower the cost per person and increase the fun and excitement by allowing friends and family to tour the California countryside with you.
